SOLD Unique “US PROPERTY” Factory Marked Python 16105E

SOLD Unique “US PROPERTY” Factory Marked Python 16105E

Extremely unique Colt Python, serial number 16105E, featuring multiple US & US PROPERTY markings. Per factory letter, this revolver was one of two Pythons in an order – both revolvers were produced “In The Green”, meaning without final finishing (typically, for embellishment and finishing outside of the Colt factory) and marked US or US PROPERTY in several locations on the revolver. Interestingly, this revolver still retains its unfinished state, with several areas of freckling throughout the bare, polished steel surface. Mechanically excellent.

It is unknown the purpose of these revolvers, however, it is of interest to note that this author’s research found that there were two US Marshals in Iowa at the time of shipment, Harold M. Grindle of the Northern District of Iowa and Melvin A. Howe of the Southern District. Grindle passed away on June 8, 1977, shortly after the shipment of these revolvers, and Howe in December of 1977 (see attached documentation). While not definitive, the Python fits within standards for acceptable sidearms for individual purchase for the US Marshals and the small order does suggest a smaller agency or private purchase rather than something larger. Unfortunately, author’s research was unable to uncover definitive information, but further research is highly suggested.

A HIGHLY unique Python that would complete even the most advanced Colt snake gun collection.
